Entre los cineastas que lograron destacar en estos terrenos, se puede citar a dos generaciones: los pertenecientes a la "vieja guardia", como Felipe Cazals, Jorge Fons, Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, Gabriel Retes y Arturo Ripstein, y los de la "nueva generacion", en su mayoria egresados de las dos escuelas de cine mas importantes que hay en Mexico --Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematograficos (CUEC) y Centro de Capacitacion Cinematografica (CCC)-- como Maria Novaro, Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro, Luis Estrada, Carlos Carrera, Maryse Sistach y Juan Carlos Rulfo, por nombrar a los mas representativos.
