CWIMS is designed to help engineers analyze the infrastructure and make it easier to communicate their conclusions to others within their departments and throughout the city.
CWIMS will permit each department to store assessment values for its facilities, capturing the technical expertise of a department and packaging it in a way that people outside of the specific department can understand.
To counteract the rapid obsolescence of individual hardware and software components, CWIMS follows a "data-centric" development.
Through the course of the CWIMS project, CDM and the city have learned a great deal about designing and implementing a computer database and decision support system, and now offer their tips for a successful program.
The CWIMS project is the first phase of a long-term systems integration and corporate-wide operations improvement program for Chicago.
