We recommend that a less accurate (and less expensive) device such as a convection enhanced Pirani gauge or a piezoresistive gauge be used to measure pressure from 100 kPa down to 10 Pa, in conjunction with a more accurate absolute capacitance diaphragm gauge of 133 Pa full scale range to measure pressure down to [10.sup.-2] Pa and possibly lower.
For measuring pressure below 10 Pa, a calibrated capacitance diaphragm gauge offers the necessary accuracy, has good stability, and is contaminant-free.
In addition, if the capacitance diaphragm gauge monitoring the process is properly located with respect to the throttle valve, downstream control is generally faster to reach the desired setpoint and maintains it with better accuracy and stability.
Of the two, capacitance diaphragm gauges are preferable because they are highly accurate and give pressure measurements independent of gas species.
In the medium- to high-vacuum range, the capacitance manometer or capacitance diaphragm gauge has been used extensively as a transfer standard.
However, the NIST-developed transfer standard packages, based on a combination of high-stability MEMS pressure sensors with high-sensitivity capacitance diaphragm gauges, were robust and reliable, thereby enabling the success of these comparisons.
The discussion included capacitance diaphragm gauges, thermal conductivity gauges, like Pirani and thermocouple gauges, hot filament charge-generation gauges, and momentum transfer gauges like the spinning rotor gauge.
