Once Health Canada authorizes a drug for sale in Canada, CADTH then reviews the drug for its therapeutic and cost-effectiveness through its common drug review (CDR) process and makes a recommendation to jurisdictions whether to list the drug on its own formulary.
The objectives of this study were: (1) to estimate the frequency of errata for drug trial publications that are included in systematic reviews conducted by the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) Common Drug Review (CDR), (2) to evaluate the errata's potential impact on reviews by rating the severity of errors they describe, and (3) to determine whether errata are accessible to reviewers through standard systematic review searching methods.
Provinces (excepting Quebec) jointly established the Common Drug Review (CDR) under CADTH's auspices to evaluate the comparative clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of newly approved outpatient medications.
All publicly funded drug plans (except Quebec), cooperated to build, improve, and fund the CADTH Common Drug Review. If a pharmaceutical or biotech company wants their drug to be considered for inclusion on the publicly funded drug plans formulary, they submit all relevant clinical and economic information to CADTH for review.

The investigators looked at a total of 602 decisions by governmental agencies tasked with determining whether new drugs should be listed in public formularies in their respective countries: the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in the United Kingdom, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) in Australia, and the Common Drug Review (CDR) in Canada.
In Canada, the Common Drug Review [CDR] undertakes reviews of new drugs and makes funding recommendations to participating federal, provincial, and territorial drug benefit plans based on the "relative therapeutic merits of the drug and its cost-effectiveness." (20) Manufacturers seeking coverage of a new product by a participating drug benefit plan must make a submission to the CDR.
Of 36 new drugs common to all jurisdictions studied, Canada's Common Drug Review recommended only 61% of drugs for public drug plan reimbursement, less than the European Union (91%) and the United States (88%).
The national Common Drug Review evaluates a drug based on its therapeutic value and cost effectiveness, and makes recommendations to provincial drug plans.
Now, Gilead is awaiting federal and provincial reimbursement review for Sovaldi under the Canadian Common Drug Review process.
