The most important event to affect the group in August was Eighth Composite Command's decision to consolidate P-38 CCRC functions in the 495th FTG at AAF station F342, Atcham, on 14 August.
The first change--announced in mid-September and effective 1 October--reassigned the 496th and its sister group (495th FTG) from Composite Command to Fighter Command.
