The issues motivating this study are: how do instructors motivate students to participate in computer-mediated discussion? If they do participate, how can the quality of their interaction be assessed by instructors?
The long range questions in this article are: How can instructors motivate students to participate in computer-mediated discussion? If they do participate, how can we assess the quality of discourse?
The aim of this study was to investigate individual students' own interpretations of his or hers contribution to the computer-mediated discussions. The subjects of the study were 20 upper elementary students between the age of 15 and 16, who participated in Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) inquiry in literature.
In this study the aim was to investigate how does an individual interpret his or hers own contribution to the computer-mediated discussions in computer supported collaborative learning.
Individuals' Interpretations of Their Contribution to Computer-Mediated Discussions
To clarify social knowledge construction processes, several authors have studied collaborative discussions (Barnes & Todd, 1977; Mercer & Wegerif, 1999; Schwarz, 1995; Van Zee, 2000), and in the CSCL context especially the computer-mediated discussions (Cohen & Scardamalia, 1998; Bell & Linn, 2000).
Individuals' participation activity in the CSCL interactions has been studied (Guzdial & Turns, 2000; Palonen & Hakkarainen, 2000), as well as how participation activity and the quality of computer-mediated discussions correlate.
Research studies about pre-service teachers' reflective thinking in computer-mediated discussions indicate more positive than negative findings regarding the depth and complexity of discussions.
