The American Jewish establishment, led by the Council of Jewish Federations
and supported by the leadership of the local federations, resisted Israeli pressure and rejected an Israeli proposal to stop aiding Jewish emigres who resettled in the United States.
At its 1964 General Assembly, the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds (CJFWF), an umbrella organization comprising the nation's leading philanthropic and social service agencies, "commended the President and the Congress for enacting the Economic Opportunity Act," the Great Society's core social reform program.
