This may explain why there were no improvements on the critical thinking test. Therefore, in the present study, quantitative and qualitative data provided a convergent picture, i.e., that while the applied teaching intervention included potentially useful elements in terms of providing important prerequisites in EBDM, such teaching requires more time and depth.
Significant interactions (p=.05) resulted between the Professional Development scores on the ExCET and overall college GPA (r2 = .159), TASP math (r2 = .131), TASP reading (r2 = .327), Nelson-Denny score (scale score) (r2 = .299), Cornell Critical Thinking test scores (7 individually scored sub-test variables) (r2 = .187), and gender (r2 = .210).
The authors identified increased scores within the California Critical Thinking Test after applying a teaching method which stimulated students to ask questions on the subject matter.
ANOVA was used to determine the effect of teaching strategy, gender, age, race, admission GPA, cumulative GPA, and nursing GPA on critical thinking test results.
In 1964, he and colleague Watson developed the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA), a multiple choice critical thinking test designed to measure the critical thinking subskills: inference, recognition of assumptions, deduction, interpretation, and evaluation of arguments (Adams, Whitlow, Stover, & Johnson, 1996; Watson & Glaser, 1991).
The two end-of-second-year dependent variables were scores on the CAAP science reasoning and writing skills tests, while the two end-of-third-year dependent variables were scores on the CAAP reading comprehension and critical thinking tests.
Both groups took the same Cornell Z Critical Thinking Test pre and post.
We find that community college transfer students score no differently on critical thinking tests than our students who enter as freshmen.
Ku (2009) presents the following critical thinking assessment instruments as the most wellknown: Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (Watson & Glaser, 1980); Ennis-Weir Critical Thinking Essay Test (Ennis & Weir, 1985); Cornell Critical Thinking Test (Ennis, Millman & Tomko, 1985); California Critical Thinking Skills Test (Facione, 1990); and, Halpern Critical Thinking Assessment Using Everyday Situations (Halpern, 2007).
Both groups took a critical thinking test before the experimental group alone was instructed on how to use the dialectical journal.
A checklist based on Facione's critical thinking factors (1990) and "international reading-writing critical thinking test: accurate reading and basic writing assessment"(Paul & Elder, 2006) was used.
