The first set of patient health status variables was constructed using the Deyo-adapted Charlson Index (D-CI) (Deyo, Cherkin, and Ciol 1992).(3) The D-CI is calculated by assigning weights (values between 1 and 6) to selected diagnoses and surgical procedures from all hospitalizations in the year prior to the index hospitalization.
Average treatment costs are significantly higher for hospitals with a higher proportion of the following types of KR patients: African American patients, patients with a D-CI value of 2 or more and patients receiving bilateral KR surgeries.
The D-CI was originally developed for use with hospital medical records, but it has been adapted for use with administrative claims data (Deyo, Cherkin, and Ciol 1992).
