Surgeon Rear Admiral Philip Raffaelli, DMETA
chief executive, said: "It is excellent news that the assessment phase for this project will now go ahead.
A report by the University of Birmingham, commissioned by the MoD, about the impact the new DMETA
centre will have on the city, was handed to the city council last week.
DMETA is responsible for managing five UK MoD hospitals, a medical defence training centre in Aldershot, RCDM and a specialist rehabilitation unit for the Armed Forces.
He will continue to govern the centre until April next year, but in the meantime has been working with the MoD to make DMETA's move to Birmingham a reality.
By 2008 the MoD hopes that DMETA will have a firm foothold in Birmingham and plans to start as early as next year with some training courses being transferred to the city.
