In November 1999, the DVD CCA and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) sent cease-and-desist letters to more than 50 website owners and Internet service providers, requiring them to remove links to the DeCSS code because of its alleged violation of trade secret and copyright laws, including (in the U.S.) the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
