This proposal has immediately been condemned by the Law Society and the Royal College of Psychiatrists as 'fundamentally flawed', and would apply to more than 26,000 people a year who are sectioned under the 1983 Mental Health Act of whom some 2,400 are estimated as having dangerous and severe personality disorders.
The new president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Dr Mike Shooter, was reacting to new Government draft legislation, which aims to close the loophole in the law that currently lets patients with dangerous and severe personality disorders avoid detention in mental health hospitals if the doctors consider them to be untreatable.
