The abolition of the so-called default retirement age has also led to workers staying on, said pension firm Royal London.
That's an increase of nearly one quarter of a million people compared with three years ago, when the default retirement age (DRA) was abolished.
The previous default retirement age of 65, said to be a form of legal discrimination in the workplace, was abolished three years ago on 1 October 2011 and the number of workers aged 65 and over in work has increased by 229,000.
Saga said there had been a 36% increase since May 2010, to 1.09 million, partly following the abolition of the default retirement age. The number of 50 to 64-year-olds in work has jumped from 7.2 million to just under eight million in the same period, a rise of 9%.
The coalition has previously stated: "We will phase out the default retirement age and hold a review to set the date at which the state pension age starts to rise to 66, although it will not be sooner than 2016 for men and 2020 for women."
Paul Green, Saga's director of communications, said: "Thanks in part to the abolition of the default retirement age, many more older people are able to continue in work for as long as they choose to do so, rather than at the whim of their employer."
THE majority of businesses in the West Midlands want to see the default retirement age (DRA) re-introduced - to avoid losing promising younger staff.
Mr Luciano, who heads up Coventrybased Expert Tooling and Automation, believes the ending of the default retirement age should be the launch pad for improved training of apprentices, through mentoring.
Firms in the UK could be gearing up to offer employees "golden goodbyes" in light of the official abolition of the default retirement age, according to research.
They left their posts on Thursday - two days before the scrapping of the default retirement age by the UK Government.
