DOPs have been used in satellite navigation, for example, geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) and attitude dilution of precision (ADOP) in GNSS technology.
Wildlife GPS collars record position dilution of precision (PDOP), along with horizontal dilution of precision (HDOP), vertical dilution of precision (VDOP), time dilution of precision (TDOP), and whether or not the position is a three dimensional (3D) or two dimensional (2D) fix based on the number of observable satellites on which the position was calculated (Telonics 2009).
Dilution of precision (DOP) measures are calculated from the geometry of the satellites used to determine a position fix and were developed as a measure of positional accuracy based on trilateration, the process of determining absolute or relative locations of points using distances and geometry of hyperbolas (Langley 1999).
The geometric dilution of precision (GDoP) effect and its associated metric are also explored, as it is known to affect all trilateration-based systems [15].This study also serves as the motivation for the creation of a topology-based smoothing algorithm that aims to alleviate the effect of GDoP and thus reduce the measured error.
The degradation of accuracy measurements caused by the "geometry" or position of usable satellites falls under the heading of dilution of precision (DOP) or geometric dilution of precision.
