The purpose of the two-volume set is to present documents from the Dead Sea Scrolls by genre so that scholars who are studying a particular genre do not have to gather texts from several different volumes of Discoveries in the Judaean Desert
This second edition, DSSR 2, reflects the substantial impact of the publication of additional volumes of Discoveries in the Judaean Desert
. New scholarship, additional and revised texts, and other improvements have been incorporated.
The 2008 edition is timely, given the completion of the publication of all the Scrolls in the Discoveries in the Judaean Desert

series inaugurates the publication of Qumran biblical scrolls from Cave 4 that are written in Jewish script (derived from the Aramaic square script).

Even with these critical comments, there can be no doubt that this volume will soon become a standard source for scholars and may, indeed, only ever be supplemented rather than superseded by the eventual publication of the principal edition of the cave 4 manuscripts of the Community Rule in the Clarendon Press Discoveries in the Judaean Desert
