The three-day EAFM Orientation and Planning Workshop was conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) - Caraga held in Santa Monica, Siargao Island on March 5-7, 2019.
Asuncion Maputol, former BFAR-10 regional director, also shared her EAFM experience to the group citing the failure, challenges and success of Panguil Baywide Management.
Of the 24 EAFM
programs initiated, Rodriguez said six have been completed, while 18 are ongoing.
Highlight during day one of the EAFM
workshop was the illustration of the past and present condition of the fishery resources in Lake Mainit, as presented by representatives from the LGUs of the said municipalities.
With the fishing grounds of Ticao Pass, San Bernardino Strait and Lagonoy Gulf being declared as Marine Key Biodiversity Areas (MKBA), the Department of Agricultures Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) implemented programs in mainstreaming ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM
) as early as January 2017.
TMP is a priority conservation area for the Sulu Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion Programme of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, as well as an integration site for biodiversity conservation, and fisheries management using the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM
) and climate change adaptation under the Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral reefs, Fisheries and Food security (CTI-CFF).
