DVB and EGDMA cross linkers were procured from Sigma Aldrich and Merck, respectively.
After surface modification with 3(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate, selective MIP shell towards [beta]-estradiol was synthesized on the surface of the Si[O.sub.2] nanoparticles using the functional monomer MAA and cross-linker EGDMA. The highest binding of [beta]-estradiol was obtained within a very short time (15 min) with a maximum binding capacity of 44.5 [micro]mol[g.sup.-1].
Hg(II)-imprinted polystyrene was synthesized by using styrene as monomer, EGDMA as crosslinker, and AIBN as initiator while using Hg[I.sub.2] as template.
Afterwards, 531 [micro]L (2.8 mmol) of EGDMA, a cross-linking agent, and 32 [micro]L (0.37 mmol) of MAA were added and shaken in a Vortex during another 15 minutes.

Poly(dimethyldiphenylsiloxane) divinyl terminated (9300 g/mol ([M.sub.n]); 84:16 mole ratio of dimethylsiloxane/diphenylsiloxane) (PDMDPS), 1,3-dimethyltetravinyldisiloxane (DMTVDS), acrylic acid (AA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), Nvinylpyrrolidone (NVP), 1,1'-azobis(cyclohexanecarbonitrile) (ACBN), phenol, toluene, and acetonitrile were all obtained from Aldrich, Canada.
The amounts of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) can range from 30-40% by weight in contact lens acrylic polymer down to the tenths of a weight percent in plastics used in automotive or bathtub/hot tub plastics.
Hexyl acrylate (HA, 98%, Sigma-Aldrich, Mexico), 2hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA, 97%, Sigma-Aldrich, Mexico), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA, 98%, Sigma-Aldrich, Mexico), and PEGMA ([M.sub.n] = 526, 1,100, and 4,000 g/mol) from Sigma-Aldrich, Mexico; were purified by passing through a hydroquinone inhibitor remover column.
After that, the selective magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer sorbent for NP (Fe3O4@SiO2-MIP) was synthesized by surface molecular imprinting technique, using NP as template, 4-vinyl pyridine (4-Vpy) as functional monomers, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as crosslinker and azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator.
