Findings from the 2001 town meeting prompted the EHSRC
to organize the scientific conference and workshop "Environmental Health Impacts of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: Anticipating Hazards--Searching for Solutions" held March 2004 in Iowa City, Iowa, which brought together experts in environmental science from the United States, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands to address major environmental health issues associated with CAFOs.
Included in this team were a community-based organization (COPI), several community faith-based organizations, an academic research center (the Office of Clinical and Community Health Research of the EHSRC
), organizations of medicine students, a community-based primary health care center ("Concilio de Salud Integral de Loiza"), and SoM academic training programs (Pediatrics and Family Medicine Residency Programs).
The Environmental Health Sciences Research Center (EHSRC
) at The University of Iowa, in conjunction with its partner, the Belin-Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development (also a component of The University of Iowa), is helping some of these future leaders understand the environment and their role in it, with the goal of inspiring the next generation of environmental health advocates.
