Armed with this research evidence, the EHSSB suggested that a strategy, using health visitors, could be the linchpin to promoting preschool child dental registration in areas of high social deprivation.
Nine intervention wards and 14 control wards were purposively selected from the EHSSB area as they had the lowest levels of preschool child dental registration and together represented the top 10 percent of the most deprived communities in Northern Ireland (CSA 2005, Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety 2005, NISRA 2006).
In response the EHSSB instigated and launched their community-based preschool child dental registration program entitled 'Treasure baby teeth'.
