Dubai: A judge in the Dubai International Financial Centre court approved on Sunday an application to liquidate ES Bankers (Dubai) Ltd, or ESBD, the latest collapse of a unit of the Portuguese Espirito Santo family's empire.
The Dubai Financial Services Authority, or DFSA, on September 29 submitted an application to the DIFC court for the winding up of ESBD, saying it was no longer able to meet its obligations.
The restrictions were required due to the failure of the ES Group, Banque Privee Espirito Santo, one of the group's many holdings, to honour contractual commitments to its Dubai unit ESBD, the DFSA said in a statement.
European banks with operations in the Middle East have already expressed some interest in buying ESBD, the Financial Times (FT) reported on Thursday, quoting people aware of the matter.
However, parents of the youngsters affected by the closure say they are not happy with the decision and want the special ESBD unit reopened.
Councillor Lindsay Whittle, chair of the governors at Cwm Ifor, described it as a difficult decision which had to be made due to a number of incidents at the ESBD unit He said: "We accept some parents are not happy at the changes but the governors had to consider the overall welfare of staff and some 200 pupils."
The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) said on Thursday it was freezing deposits and imposing other restrictions on private banker ES Bankers (Dubai) Ltd (ESBD), part of the Portuguese Espirito Santo family's troubled empire.
ESBD, which is owned by the Espirito Santo Financial Group , has now been restricted from taking or paying deposits, and it is required to maintain and preserve its assets, the DFSA, which is the regulator for the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), said in statement.
