In the EU, sports foods fall under the dietetic foods umbrella, which requires products to be clearly distinguishable from normal foods and intended for specific population groups with particular nutritional requirements--in this case defined as "foods intended to meet the expenditure of intense muscular effort, especially for sportsmen." Four options are being considered as changes to the legislation, with ESSNA speaking out in favour of the option that would repeal the dietetic foods umbrella, retaining the existing legislation on other groups of dietetic foods but regulating sports nutrition products as normal foods.
