The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) came into force in February 2006 in 200 selected districts in India, say economists Azeez and Akhtar, and is designed to enhance the livelihood security of unorganized workers in rural areas by guaranteeing 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to a rural household whose members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
The law was initially called the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) but was renamed on October 2, 2009.
