Rushton, an internationally recognized expert in bioethics and palliative care, is Co-Chair of the Johns Hopkins Hospital's Ethics Consultation Service and was instrumental in creating the Harriet Lane Compassionate Care Program, the first pediatric palliative care program in Maryland (she has been its director since 2000).
The University of Michigan adult ethics consultation service provides clinical consultations to any adult service at our medical center.
(Neither the medical team caring for the Chinese man nor the hospital's ethics consultation service were aware that another patient needed the ICU bed.) Several days later, the physician who tried to admit the patient discovers that a corpse was occupying a bed in the ICU.
A national survey conducted in 1999-2000 found 95% of hospitals had an ethics consultation service (Fox, Myers, & Pearlman, 2007).
an active ethics consultation service can offer hands-on training for residents and faculty members.
Organizational Ethics in Senior Health Care Services is organized into two sections: The Framework for Organizational Ethics (including chapters entitled An Ethics Primer" and Establishing an Organizational Ethics Consultation Service'), and Issues in Organizational Ethics for Senior Health Care Services.
Clinical ethics involves the identification, analysis, and resolution of moral problems that arise in the care of individual patients.[1] Although such activity has been an integral part of the practice of medicine for centuries, only recently have some authors called clinical ethics a distinct discipline.[2-4] It has developed as an application of philosophical medical ethics at the bedside.[5-7] The scope of clinical ethics includes patient consultation,[8] education,[9] and research.[10] In this article, we offer the first report of an ethics consultation service developed in a department of family medicine, and analyze the results of its first year of operation.
The typical cases that come to our ethics consultation service are about decisional capacity, surrogate decision-making, safety, goals of treatment, and, less frequently, about withholding or withdrawal of treatment.
The ethics consultation service must be able to triage, assign a lead consultant (if a team is involved in the consultation), and coordinate among the patient, family members, and the relevant clinical services, such as palliative care, pastoral care, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and the involved medical services.
JC also calls the number for the hospital's ethics consultation service and requests an ethics consultation.
Fals, "Evaluation of an Ethics Consultation Service: Patient and Family Perspective," American Journal of Medicine 101 (1996): 135-41; David Casarett and Mark Siegler, "The Role of the Ethics Consultation Service in Unilateral DNAR Orders," Critical Care Medicine, forthcoming; Brennan, "Ethics Committees and Decisions to Limit Care"; John LaPuma, Carol B.
This is based on indications that most Canadian public health professionals: 1) have little formal training in ethics; 2) prefer to learn about moral theory through both online resources and workshops that include practical case studies; 3) support access to formal PPH ethics consultation services; and 4) are especially interested in tools that assist them in dealing with empirical uncertainty, political interference, cultural diversity and material scarcity as these affect their decision-making.
