African Union commissioner for rural economy and agriculture, Roda Timusiime, who read the citation for the FANRPAN Food Security Policy Leadership Award during the presentation ceremony, said the current global food crisis was a wake-up call for the rest of the world and in particular for Africa to rethink its strategies on food security.
East and Southern Africa government ministers of agriculture, in a bid to support rural development and the harmonisation of agricultural policy at the regional level, established FANRPAN in 1997.
FANRPAN was rated in the top thirty think tanks in Africa by the University of Pennsylvania and was specifically cited for effective use of science and technology.
