The possibility that folic acid is essential for normal embryonic development of the human nervous system was raised 35 years ago.[18] A year later, a report noted that urinary excretion of formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU - a histidine metabolite that accumulates in the absence of folate) was more common in pregnancies associated with congenital abnormalities, including NTDs, than in unaffected pregnancies.[19] Unfortunately, this intriguing observation was not pursued at the time of the report.
