The floristic quality index (FQI) for each site was determined using the program developed by the Conservation Research Institution (Wilhelm & Masters 2000) in conjunction with Rothrock (2004).
The Floristic Quality Indices (FQI) and mean Coefficients of Conservatism ([C.sub.av]) are shown in Table 3.
Floristic Quality Index (FQI).--The FQI for the three prairie cemeteries ranges from 23.6 to 30.3 for native species and from 20.3 to 26.9 for all species (Table 3).
The specific objectives of this research were: (1) to identify and voucher all vascular plant taxa within each woodland; and (2) to use the species lists to calculate the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) and the average Coefficient of Conservatism (mean C) for the entire site and for the two separate woodlands (Swink & Wilhelm 1994; Rothrock 2004).
Using the program developed by the Conservation Design Forum in conjunction with Rothrock (2004), the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) and the mean Coefficient of Conservatism (mean C) were determined not only for Cooper Woods and Skinner Woods individually, but for the two sites combined.
The Floristic Quality Index (FQI) and mean C for the combined CW-SW complex are listed in Table 2.
While the FQI concept, as described by Swink and Wilhelm (1974; 1994), has been widely used to assess site quality, particularly in wetlands, there has been some concern about bias, whereby larger areas generally have larger FQI values.
One key aspect of our results was anticipated: the ranges of modified FQI values within parks were fairly limited.
The Floristic Quality Index (FQI) for DWNP was determined using the program developed by the Conservation Design Forum in conjunction with Rothrock (2004).
The Floristic Quality Indices (FQI) and the mean Coefficients of Conservatism (mean C) clearly specify the quality of the preserve (Table 2).
