While the PSNI has its own in-house forensic branch that focuses primarily on crime scene work, it relies on the FSNI
for the majority of its subsequent laboratory analysis.
He added: "This will help FSNI
to respond to the ever-changing demands of forensic science."
He said he only put one integrity label on the box because in fact, FSNI
staff had been complaining about CSI's using too many labels and that a "non-compliance" order had since been rescinded.
Deputy Chief Inspector Brendan McGuigan said a report in 2005 and a follow-up in 2007 had identified serious shortcomings in the operations at FSNI
. Following an inspection this year he added: "We did find that a number of weaknesses identified in previous inspections/reviews continue to be a problem for FSNI
The dossier added: "The sustainability of some FSNI
specialisms such as identifying explosives traces and firearms is dependent on the development of new markets.
