Since Ubisoft took over the franchise with 2008's Far Cry 2, the series has been built around transplanting first-person shooter and open world gameplay to locales like an African country, a tropical island and the Himalayas.
Critic Tom Bissell once (http://grantland.com/features/line-explores-reasons-why-play-shooter-games/) described Far Cry 2 as a game that "never comments on what you're doing - not internally, not externally - and so you're a monster, mostly, that does monstrous things."
Far Cry 4 neither has the grit of Far Cry 2, nor the magical qualities of Far Cry 3's Rook Island, but it brings so much more to the table that it's the perfect follow up to both those games.
Various spin offs kept fans happy until Far Cry 2 arrived in 2008, which proved just a popular.
The third instalment is not a direct sequel to Far Cry 2 (as Far Cry 2 was not a direct sequel to the original Far Cry).
Next month, the company is expected to release a Far Cry game compilation, titled "Far Cry Wild Expeditions", which will be inclusive of a HD remaster of original game, Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon.
