Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has begun shipping two single processor models of its Power Mac G5, the world's fastest personal computer featuring the first 64-bit desktop processor and the industry's first 1 GHz front-side bus. Apple has received orders for over 100,000 Power Mac G5s since its introduction on June 23.
Geared for high-end computing applications such as CAD and digital content creation, it features a 400 MHz front-side bus and up to 4 GB of main memory.
IBM is also announcing the PC 300GL using the 600MHz Intel Pentium III chip and 133MHz front-side bus in micro tower or desktop formats.
This segment of the Xeon line is due for a refresh, and the Nehalem EP processor is scheduled to be released during early 2009.
Like other Nehalem chips, the Nehalem EP chips will include an integrated memory controller and use Intel's Quick Path Interconnect (QPI), which replaces the front-side bus and allows more data to flow between the processors and other components in the computer, speeding up the computer's overall performance.
Copyright 2009 IDG Middle East.
The all-in-one updated iMac[R] line with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors and the most powerful graphics ever available in an iMac, includes faster processors with 6MB L2 cache and a faster 1066 MHz front-side bus across the entire line, and 2GB of memory standard in most models.
Dell said the workstations feature a dual-socket design supporting up to two next-generation multi-core Intel Xeon processors and use a dual independent front-side bus design, with up to 1333MHz on the T5400 and up to 1600MHz on the T7400.
The 13.3" 2GHz white MacBook features a 667MHz front-side bus, 1GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 80GB SATA hard drive at 5400rpm, DVD-ROM/CD-RW optical drive, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 and Mini-DVI out and a suggested retail price of USD1,099.
Direct Connect Architecture helps eliminate the bottlenecks inherent in older, competitive technologies that feature a front-side bus. In fact, Direct Connect Architecture provides up to 1600MHz, while the competitor's current technology runs at 800MHz.
"The new Power Mac G5 combines the world's first 64-bit desktop processor, the industry's first 1 GHz front-side bus, and up to 8 GB of memory to beat the fastest Pentium 4 and dual Xeon-based systems in industry-standard benchmarks and real-world professional applications."
It is powered by Pentium III or 4 processors for redundant fault reliability, providing up to 1.5 GHz with 133 MHz front-side bus speed.
At the Computex trade show in Taipai earlier this month, many motherboard manufacturers were showing systems using Via's current chipset, which has a 133MHz front-side bus but currently supports only 100MHz memory.
It claimed this provides a shorter pipeline, lower clock speeds and higher (1,333MHz) front-side bus speeds, with the range of processors including dual- and quad-core offerings and the ability to run 32- and 64-bit operating systems.
