Collectively, the five major recipients of DoH funding for research constitute 0.46% (R417.9 million) and 0.35% (R403 million) of the consolidated government expenditure on health in 2009/10 and 2011/12, respectively (Table 2); these figures suggest that the DoH's expenditure on health research has fallen well below the 1.6% cited by the GFHR for 2005.
