The GHHS honors senior medical students, residents, role-model physician teachers, and other professionals for "demonstrated excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion, and dedication to service."

The DSS invited the GHHS team to use their PC banks, available at 15 service centers, as user-feedback labs to help gain a better understanding of people's needs as they interact with the government online.

For example, children residing in GHH, who might have otherwise been placed in state care, are often able to maintain connections with birth parents and cultural and ethnic traditions (Koh & Testa, 2008).
Challenges for those in GHH include a greater likelihood of poverty, limited resources, stress due to fear of removal of children from the home, a lack of food security, and social isolation.
Much of what we know to date about GHH is based on findings from studies with urban African American families (Haglund, 2000; Kelley, Whitley, & Campos, 2013; Minkler & Fuller-Thomson, 2005).
GHHS members from both Marshall University's and West Virginia University's School of Medicine collaborated to bring this discussion and celebration of humanism to the attention of West Virginia's medical community.
