CHITRAL -- The glacial lake outburst flood (Glof), which struck the Golen valley on the evening of July 7, has damaged the headworks of the 108MW Golen hydropower station, leading to its shutdown, thus exposing the technical fault and lack of proper planning by Wapda.
ISLAMABAD -- Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk reduction project in Northern Areas of Pakistan (GLOF-II) will cover 15 districts benefitting around 29 million people in the region with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) funded US$ 37 million.
GLOFs have appeared as a serious threat in the mountainous region of HKH in last two decades due to increase in population growth, climate change, economic development and many other anthropogenic activities in these areas which were inhabited and were not advanced previously (Khanal et al., 2015; Nie et al., 2017).
Environmentalist and media spokesperson at the Climate Change Ministry said that after successful completion of the first phase of the five-year Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) project in 2015, the United Nation's Green Climate Fund approved in October 2016 an amount of $36 million funding for second phase of the GLOF project.
One of the main hurdles in preventing GLOF'S is the lack of technical knowledge available about these glacial lakes.
