Approximately 99% of the fatally injured 1,142 GMWs were males.
Hispanic or Latino workers constituted approximately 36% of GMWs (1) and approximately 31% of fatally injured GMWs.
GMWs typically are employed as intermittent labor at private residences, recreational facilities, public buildings, parks and cemeteries, and other locations.
Wide-ranging injury prevention strategies that emphasize intervention for specific hazards and tasks (Table 2), focus on key worker groups, and are language and literacy-level appropriate are needed to reduce fatalities among GMWs. CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and its partners previously have recommended specific types of training and comprehensive safety and health programs for grounds maintenance operations (6,7).
GMW employers and supervisors should use tailgate or toolbox safety ([paragraph]) During 2003-2008, job-related exposure to environmental heat caused the deaths of 12 GMWs, including eight who were Hispanic or Latino.
GMW is Victorias largest rural water authority and covers approximately one third of the state, including the largest irrigation asset in the country Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District which generates $2.1 billion in agricultural production each year.
GMW are responsible for storing, managing, and delivering about 70 per cent of the states water and are central to the delivery of major projects like the $2 billion Connections Project, which is delivering vital upgrades for irrigators in the district.
Managing Director, Gavin Hanlon said that the ESC's Draft Decision was a strong endorsement of GMW's future direction.
"The ESC draft decision is a great outcome for GMW and its customers, providing confidence and security for the future," said Mr Hanlon.
"It approves GMW's proposed service levels, capital and operating costs with some minor adjustment recommended".
"GMW will make further submissions on a number of technical regulatory matters included in the Draft Decision," Mr Hanlon said.
"GMW's intention is to continue to simplify and refine its tariff structure over the coming years while enhancing overall service levels".
