During the trial, researchers from the GUMC and the University of Hong Kong genetically engineered mice models to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD).
"It has long been thought that acupuncture can reduce stress, but this is the first study to show molecular proof of this benefit," said the study's lead author, Ladan Eshkevari, Ph.D., an assistant professor at Georgetown's School of Nursing and Health Studies, a part of GUMC.
"This study is the first demonstration of that concept," stated Glezer who works in the Laboratory for Computational Cognitive Neuroscience at GUMC.
"Up until now, it has been impossible to separate the influence of sex chromosomes from the effects of sex hormones, and in this paper, we have shown for the first time that sex chromosomes are impacting blood pressure - independent of sex hormones," says the study's lead investigator, Kathryn Sandberg, PhD, director of the GUMC Center for the Study of Sex Differences in Health, Aging, and Disease.
"A solution to tamoxifen resistance is sorely needed, and if a strategy like this can work, it would make a difference in our clinical care of breast cancer," says the study's lead investigator, Robert Clarke, PhD, DSc, a professor of oncology and physiology and biophysics at Lombardi, a part of Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC).
The researchers reviewed the outcomes of 228 patients treated with SRS at UPCI and Georgetown University Medical Centre (GUMC).
Speaking about the study, lead author Patrick Forcelli, a graduate student in the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience at GUMC said: "That is of particular concern because some of the drugs may predispose to psychiatric disorders later in life.
"We know that early-life exposure to AEDs such as Phenobarbital triggers cell death in many brain regions associated with the onset of schizophrenia," said Guillermo Palchik, a doctoral student in the department of pediatrics at GUMC.
The understanding of the functional interaction between these two brain structures is expected to reveal novel targets for therapeutic intervention for post traumatic stress disorder and other anxiety disorders," said Ashley Decker, a research assistant in the pharmacology department at GUMC, and now a student at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.
