In three states, publicly funded screening programs switched from gonorrhea culture to nonculture tests; health departments in Iowa and Mississippi switched to using nucleic acid probe assays, and in North Dakota to ligase chain reaction tests.

From June 25 through June 28, rectal, pharyngeal, urethral (males), and cervical (females) swabs for chlamydia culture and rectal swabs for gonorrhea culture were obtained from the 75 residents of the remaining three units of the facility and from the 15 residents of the first unit who initially tested negative.
For males who have had sex with other males in the past year, an annual RPR (rapid plasma reagin) test for syphilis is recommended, along with annual pharyngeal gonorrhea cultures for those who have engaged in oral sex and rectal GC/CT swabs for those engaging in receptive anal intercourse.
To determine the number of laboratories that perform genital gonorrhea cultures as their routine detection method, positive gonorrhea case reports submitted to the state health department during a representative 3-month period (August-October 2001) were examined to obtain a convenience sample of laboratories that culture genital specimens for gonorrhea.
Of the five clinics that each submitted [greater than or equal to] 1500 gonorrhea cultures to the MPHL in 1994, the proportion of positive cultures increased substantially for only one clinic.
