The Greater Flamingo
(Phoenicopterusroseus) is a species with a broad distribution range from the western Mediterranean basin to Sri Lanka in the north, and South Africa in the south.

The 'Jewels of the UAE' initiative focuses on 12 iconic species found in the country, which include the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), Dugong (Dugong dugon), Greater Flamingo
(Phoenicopterusroseus), Caracal (Caracal caracal), Arabian Oryx (Oryx leucoryx), Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata), Mountain Gazelle (Gazella gazelle cora), Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug), Pharaoh Eagle-owl (Bubo ascalaphus), Sand Cat (Felis margarita), Arabian Sand Gecko (Stenodactylus arabicus) and the Blanford's Fox (Vulpes cana) .
In a bid to protect natural wildlife from ongoing development projects that affect the country's environment, the municipality yesterday released 16 Greater Flamingos
and 50 Socotra Ccrmorants into Dubai Creek Park.
The Greater flamingo
makes a mound on islands or in a sheltered coastal habitat and lays a single egg.
A newly launched website on the UAE's rich biodiversity focuses on some of the rare, endangered as well as unique wildlife features found in the country, including the Hawksbill Turtle, the Dugong and the Greater Flamingo
This programme is helping EAD to better understand migration routes and stopover sites used by the Greater flamingo
. In 2005, for the first time ever in the Arabian Peninsula, five flamingos were captured and marked with plastic rings and satellite transmitters.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, acting secretary-general of the EAD, said: "For over a decade, Al Wathba Wetland Reserve has nurtured a growing population of the beautiful Greater Flamingo
that migrate in great distances to return to Abu Dhabi every year.

Probably one of the most recognisable avians in the world, the flamingo is a very social bird which can be found in large colonies in the UAE, Kuwait, Lebanon and Bahrain.
'Sindh Ibex, Afghan Urial, Chinkara, Blue Bull, Hog Deer, Indian Wolf, Honey Badger (Ratal), Mugger or Marsh Crocodile, Gharial or Gavial, Smooth Coated Indian Otter, Indus Blind Dolphin, Greater Flamingo
and Fresh Water Turtles have been protected,' he added while giving details.
He said that the protected animals were Sindh ibex, Afghan urial (Rs150,000), chinkara, blue bull, hog deer, Indian wolf, honey badger (ratal), mugger or marsh crocodile, gharial or gavial, smooth coated Indian otter, Indus blind dolphin, greater flamingo
and fresh water turtles.
