When data were collected for the current study, there were three crucial minor parties in the New Zealand parliament: the Maori Party, the ACT Party and the Green Party of Aotearoa. The Greens fall to the left of Labour on the political spectrum as evidenced by their platform of environmentalism and social equality (Green Party of Aotearoa, 2010), whereas the ACT Party falls to the ideological right of the National party on economic issues by running on a platform of personal choice and individual responsibility (ACT New Zealand, 2011).
In terms of policy positions, the Green Party tends to unofficially side with the Labour Party in opposition to the National government (Green Party of Aotearoa, 2010).
Seven members of the Green Party of Aotearoa, New Zealand were voted into office during the country's elections last November--the first national election the Party had entered independently.
