The in vitro anti-HBV activity of NCC had been assessed in the HepG2.2.15 cells and HepG.CW cells in the previous study (15) In this study, we showed that NCC is a potent inhibitor of wild-type HBV in vitro.
Compounds 1-11 were evaluated against several tumor cells including A549, HepG 2, and Hela cell lines by MTT colorimetric method [20] using etoposide as positive control ([IC.sub.50] values 16.46 [+ or -] 1.22, 16.11 [+ or -] 0.10, and 15.00 [+ or -] 0.23 [micro]M, respectively).
MCF-7 cells, HepG 2 cells, A549 cells, and MCF-10A cells were trypsinized and seeded into 96-well plates at a density of 0.6 x [10.sup.4], 0.8 x [10.sup.4], 0.8 x [10.sup.4], and 0.8 x [10.sup.4] cells per well, respectively.
Besides, the toxicity of human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line HepG 2, human carcinoma cell line A549, and human normal breast cell line MCF-10A treating with the same dosage of free ORI and ORI-loaded SLNs were shown in Figure 2; the IC50 of ORI-loaded SLNs were 30.1 [micro]M (HepG 2) and 25.3 [micro]M (A549), and the IC50 of free ORI were 39.2 [micro]M(HepG 2) and 29.6 [micro]M (A549) after 24 h treating time.

The HepG 2.2.15 cells were routinely cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM, Gibco, USA) supplemented with 10% (v/v) fetal calf serum (Gibco, USA), 100 [micro]g/ml penicillin G, 100 [micro]g/ml streptomycin, 0.03% (v/v) L-glutamine, and 150 [micro]g [ml.sup.-1] G418 (Sigma) under 5% C[O.sub.2] atmosphere at 37[degrees]C.
The antiviral activity of the above-reported compounds was tested in vitro in cell line HFF (strain E-377 for HSV-1, strain MS for HSV-2, and strain Copenhagen for VV) and cell line HepG 2.2.2.15 (strain aywl) for HBV.

This is supported by previous investigations that tanshinones and crude ethyl acetate extract of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge have inhibitory action against P388 leukemia cell in vitro and inhibited cell growth and induced apopotosis in human hepatoma HepG (2) cells, respectively (Ryu et al.
