As mentioned in Section 1 the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) will use the VIRUS instrument to conduct a blind spectroscopic survey covering an effective area of ~90 [degrees.sup.2].
Beyond single IFU spectrographs, more ambitious projects like HETDEX and MANGA will soon begin to move the IFU business into the "large data" era.
HETDEX is led by the University of Texas at Austin, McDonald Observatory, and Department of Astronomy with participation from the Universitats-Sternwarte of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen, the Max-Planck-Institut fuar Extraterrestriche-Physik (MPE), Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam (AIP), Texas A&M University, Pennsylvania State University, and the HET consortium.
We have used VIRUS-P to complete a pilot survey to better measure the properties of LAE galaxies in support of HETDEX, among other investigations where it is uniquely powerful.
I will also discuss the synergy between HETDEX, SALT, and the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), which could lead to new avenues for South African astronomy.
Nearly a third of the money raised for HETDEX, which includes a one-of-its-kind $16 million spectrograph created by Hill called Virus (Visible Integral-Field Replicable Unit Spectrograph), came from private in-state sources.
"This is helping us train the next generation of engineers and leaders in these fields of technology," Gebhardt said of HETDEX, which derives about a quarter of its financing from UT and a $6 million special biennial line item in the state budget.
