The anticipated payoffs from this experiment are focusing the superconductivity industry, particularly the aerospace industry, on the development of high temperature superconductor (HTSj) devices for space systems; preparing and space qualifying a cryogenically cooled experimental package containing HTS devices and components in preparation for a 1992 flight; demonstrating definitively that high temperature superconductivity can make breakthroughs in spacecraft operational capability possible; and laying the groundwork for future space experiments using more complex HTS devices and subsystems to enable spacecraft designers to evaluate the benefits of using superconducting components.
