This vessel, a Secretary-class, high-endurance cutter, will enable Sri Lanka to more effectively police its coastline and exclusive economic zone, and to protect its sea-lanes of communication.
In a joint statement of the two countries released after the meeting, it was mentioned that the Philippines will get its third high-endurance cutter and research vessel this year.
The Morgenthau, a 378-foot Honolulu-based, high-endurance cutter, was patrolling the North Pacific in support of fisheries law enforcement and was carrying two officials from the China coast guard's Fisheries Law Enforcement Command.
Also participating in the exercise are 20 aircraft of the Philippine Air Force and three Philippine Navy ships, one of which is a 40-year-old high-endurance cutter BRP Gregorio del Pilar, a Hamilton-class ship acquired from the US Coast Guard, are also participating in the exercise, said Burgos.
The Hamilton-class high-endurance cutter USCGC Morgenthau (WHEC 722) was formally withdrawn from USCG service on 18th April.
In 2012, the Aquino government tapped the fund for two programs: the Barangay Line Enhancement and Sitio Electri fication Projects, P1.108 billion; and for the transfer, dry-docking and periodic hull maintenance costs of one weather high-endurance cutter class vessel, P880.6 million.
"The Pentagon has awarded a $1.8 million (Dh6.60 million) contract for the purchase of modern weapons systems that would be installed in the BRP Ramon Alcaraz, the second high-endurance cutter that the Philippines recently acquired from the United States," the statement said.
The Philippine Navy (PN) formally received its third Del Pilar Class Frigate (DPCF), the former US Coast Guard (USCG) Boutwell, the Weather High-Endurance Cutter (WHEC) 719, through the Decommissioning by the USCG and the subsequent Christening and Commissioning Ceremonies by the PN conducted at USCG Base in Alameda, California on July 21, 8 a.m.
Like its sister ship, the BRP Gregorio del Pilar, the BRP Alcaraz was classified as a high-endurance cutter built in 1968.
To demonstrate such commitment, Washington is transferring a third high-endurance cutter and a research vessel to the Philippines this year.
