The Hope Scholarship Credit provides a credit for each eligible student equal to the sum of: (1) 100% of qualified tuition and related expenses up to $2,000 (in 2009 and 2010); plus (2) 25% of qualified tuition and related expenses in excess of $2,000, up to the applicable limit.

The Hope Scholarship Credit permits a maximum credit of $1,800 per year (100% of the first $1,200 of tuition expenses plus 50% of the next $1,200 of tuition expenses) for the first two years of postsecondary education (in 2008).
For example, what percentage of taxpayers actually benefit from the Hope Scholarship Credit? With tuition costs ranging from $12,000 to $25,000 or more per year, the potential $1,500 credit hardly makes a dent.
