The population for this study consisted of 5,807 individuals certified by or working toward certification by IAODAPCA. These substance abuse counselors provide services in public and private facilities offering programs for inpatient services, outpatient services, combined inpatient and outpatient services, therapeutic communities, halfway houses, and other services in which substance abuse treatment is not the primary purpose (e.g., mental health facilities).
For those who did indicate having a professional credential, one or more of 24 different credentials were indicated, including various IAODAPCA certifications (178); certified rehabilitation counselor; prevention specialist; licensed psychologist, social worker, counselor, or nurse; certified teacher; ordained minister; and nationally certified professional counselor.
In fact, because all participants in this study are certified or working toward certification, and IAODAPCA requires ethics training for certification, one can then assume that all participants have had some ethics training or will eventually have some ethics training.
