Despite improvements in laparoscopic technology and enhanced expertise in performing laparoscopic procedures, iatrogenic bile duct injury (IBDI) remains one of the most common complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC).

There is controversy about the role of routine cholangiography during cholecystectomy in the prevention of IBDI. Although some studies suggest that intraoperative cholangiography during cholecystectomy may reduce the chance of IBDI, (6) in a recent population-based data study by Sheffield et al., (7) which retrospectively evaluated 92,932 patients with cholecystectomy, intraoperative cholangiography was not found to be effective in the prevention of IBDI.
