Groups including Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), condemned a meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (Icaat) in Morocco that set the figure for the number of tuna that fisherman will be allowed to catch at 22,000 tonnes.
The WWF said Icaat had rejected the advice of its own scientists who had wanted the 2009 catch cut drastically from 28,500 tonnes in 2008 to a figure between 8,500 and 15,000 tonnes.
The special Icaat meeting in Morocco was called to assess the threat to bluefin tuna and propose protection measures.
