An initial concern with this first edition of the ICCLE curriculum document is the manner in which the conceptualisation of language and culture in a second or foreign language learning context is represented.
Developing this capability to apply their learning appropriately through engagement in meaningful and relevant communication tasks makes the definition and differentiation between the language and culture components of the ICCLE particularly problematic.
The current ICCLE framework needs to more explicitly reflect contemporary understandings of and developments in language teaching and Chinese second language learning in order to contribute to the development of appropriate materials for schools.
