This is the first time that the IEA has warned so strongly about the risk of gas supplies from Russia, although the EU had previously identified dependence on Russian gas as a concern.
"The book reviews these important developments, but stresses that much greater government attention and support for demonstration and commercialization of this 'next generation' of biofuels is needed in order to ensure that they succeed and that the potential benefits of biofuels use in the future are maximized," said IEA. "Overall, the book finds that the future for biofuels use around the world is bright, though current production practices in IEA countries fall short of maximizing the potential benefits on offer."
"The most important reason behind the growth in transport demand is the increased use of cars for passenger travel," said IEA. "Car ownership levels have risen by 100 percent or more in many countries since 1973, and while car engines have become more efficient over the years, cars have also become bigger, heavier and more powerful.

Over the next five years, IEA expects gas demand to increase by 1.6% per year on average, marking a return to levels seen before 2017, when growth suddenly gained steam.
'Nevertheless, the global coal power fleet continued to grow, due to net additions in developing Asian countries,' the IEA said.
As per the IEA five-year outlook, the US that became the world's top oil producer in 2018, is now set to become the world's biggest oil exporter over the next five years.
The IEA published its inexplicable medium-term outlook, based on unjustifiable scenarios.
According to IEA data Russia made only 18 per cent of its pledged cut of 0.23 mbd.
This is while OPEC crude oil output dropped by 590,000 b/d in December, to 32.39 mb/d, according to IEA estimates.
