Similarly, year to year variation in temperature is unlikely to have influenced the substantial temporal patterns of fecundity and recruitment documented in this study, since mean monthly sea surface temperatures were close to normal ([less than]0.5[degrees]C anomalies) in both 1995/1996 and 1996/1997 (IGOSS 1998), throughout the 8-9 mo period which encompassed the gametogenic cycle and brief planktonic phase of spawning acroporids.
