Each year, the
IICF Week of Giving seems to be breaking participation records from previous years, and it's that participation - not the millions of dollars the group raises for charity - that Ross believes is so important for the industry and the community.

The fact that a respected organization like the
IICF even has to stick its neck out and raise the level of this conversation speaks to a serious disconnect among some of its most powerful players and an institutional mindset that needs to be bred out.

IICF earlier established its Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund following the devastation wrought by that storm in late August, and to date, has raised more than $400,000 to help the affected communities through both company contributions and individual donations from 1,000 insurance professionals.
David Brinkman, chair of the
IICF Northeast division board and executive managing director of Aon Benfield, reported that the division has now distributed grants totaling more than $3.7 million since the first event in 2007.
The
IICF was founded in 1994 and it seeks to help communities by combining the efforts of the industry in order to provide grants, volunteer service and leadership.
Bill Ross, CEO of
IICF, said the group decided to create the fund because of the severity of the fires and to let people know that insurance professionals are interested in the welfare of the community, not just selling policies and paying claims.
The percentage matches result of an
IICF poll conducted on the same topic at last year's
IICF conference.
IICF Northeast Division executive director Betsy Myatt, however, expects that may soon change.
