An Indian IJT has been in the making for more than 14 years and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited ( IJT) is confident that it would be able to get initial operational clearance sometime in 2014.
Till now, the IAF was reluctant to exercise the option of buying the aircraft from a foreign country because of the homegrown effort to develop its own IJT. Deadlines for getting the operational clearance for the aircraft under development have been breached on a number of occasions forcing planners to search for other options.
The local aircraft- maker Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is yet to sort out critical design issues related to the development of the Intermediate Jet Trainer ( IJT) -- a simple jet meant for the second stage of the flying syllabus -- leading to concerns about the project on which the pilot training programme is heavily dependent.
The IJT was first flown in 2003, four years after it was conceived in 1999.
THE unending delays in the supply of the Sukhoi- 30 MKI jet fighter and the Intermediate Jet Trainer ( IJT) to the Indian Air Force are symptomatic of the inefficient manner in which the public sector Hindustan Aeronautics Limited ( HAL) functions.
To be sure, the government appears to have taken note of the force's worries, particularly in two areas -- the delivery of Sukhoi- 30 MKIs and the creation of IJTs. " The government has taken cognisance of the IAF's complaints regarding the delayed delivery of equipment by HAL," minister of state for defence M.
Structural issues in Intermediate Jet Trainers ( IJTs).
As regards IJT development, it is a critical area of concern because it has compounded the IAF's training woes multifold.
He is also of the view that the IJT programme has been a disaster.
" In order to meet the emergent situation created due to inordinate delay in the IJT project, the IAF has already initiated the process for extending the technical life of the Kiran aircraft.
The IJT has been in the pipeline for over 14 years and its design defects have not been rectified despite HAL contracting a foreign consultant to resolve the issue.
